Tesla owner surprised by $4,280 Autopilot upgrade via 'butt dial'

One Tesla owner was surprised when he got a text acknowledging the upgrade to his Tesla Model 3 and confirming that he would be charged $4,280 for it. The first problem: Dr. Ali Vaziri wasn't aware he made the purchase, which he surmised was done accidentally on his iPhone through the Tesla app.

“My phone was in my jeans,” Vaziri told CNBC. “I took it out, put it on this charger that comes with your Tesla and that’s it. A minute later? I got the text. I’ve never purchased anything through the Tesla app before.”

Because Tesla had his credit card information used normally to charge him for a monthly connection service for maps, music and more, the Palo Alto-based electric car giant went ahead and charged Viziri. What he got was Tesla's "Enhanced Autopilot" that would allow him, among other things, to park his Model 3 while standing outside the vehicle.
