PHOENIX — Arizona Department of Health Services reported nearly 12,000 new coronavirus cases Monday morning -- a day of the week generally known for low reporting.

On Dec. 14, 11,795 new confirmed cases and one additional death were added to the state's data dashboard, bringing the total number of cases since the pandemic began to 420,248.

Mondays usually show a lower-than-average case count due to weekend reporting lags with Tuesdays often seeing larger numbers that account for the discrepancies.

Amid Monday's surprisingly high number of cases, ADHS did not give a reason or cite any changes in reporting techniques that may have played a role. In weeks prior, ADHS has publicly addressed new methods in counting and reporting that have occasionally caused a change in cases.

Arizona is expected to see its first round of coronavirus vaccines any day now, while the first vaccines in the country were reportedly administered Monday morning.
