AVONDALE, AZ — An adult teen was arrested after one person was killed and another was seriously hurt in a multi-vehicle crash in Avondale Saturday morning.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, around 4:20 a.m., deputies came upon a crash involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck at the intersection of Avondale Boulevard and Lower Buckeye Road.
Court paperwork shows that the pickup truck had collided with the rear of the semi-truck and penetrated three feet under the semi’s trailer.
A female passenger inside the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. A second female passenger from the pickup truck was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, including multiple bone fractures.
Officials say the male passenger and male driver of the pickup truck were taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the semi-truck was not hurt in the incident.
Deputies say the driver of the pickup, 19-year-old Gabino Matancillas, was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana at the time of the crash. Deputies reportedly found multiple 12-packs of beer in the vehicle.
Matancillas, who also broke his leg, was driving on a suspended license due to a DUI conviction in late November.
He was arrested at his home in Goodyear on Monday and is being held on a $100,000 bond for manslaughter. endangerment, aggravated DUI, and aggravated assault, according to court documents.
