DPS: Loop 202 driver takes evasive action to avoid collision with wrong-way driver

MESA, AZ — A driver on the Loop 202 needed to take evasive action to avoid a crash with a driver going the wrong way last month.

The Department of Public Safety says at about 1:30 a.m.on June 27 dispatchers received roughly eight calls regarding a wrong-way driver on the Loop 202 near Sky Harbor International Airport. A DPS trooper located the car going eastbound in the westbound lanes of the 202 near Scottsdale Road.

The car was stopped on the 202 near Dobson Road, but only after another driver had to take evasive action to avoid being struck by the vehicle, according to a probable cause statement.

The driver, 27-year-old Steven Octavio Lopez, had a reported blood alcohol content of 0.229, nearly three times the legal limit.

He has been charged with aggravated DUI and endangerment.
