MESA, AZ — Additional details have emerged in a wrong-way driver crash on Loop 202 Thursday morning, which sent three people to the hospital.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred around 3 a.m. near Baseline Road.

A blue Dodge pickup truck was reportedly traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Loop 202. The pickup struck a white Chrysler passenger car with three people inside.

DPS says the three occupants in the Chrysler were taken to the hospital. One had a spine and wrist fracture, while another required surgery for abdominal injuries. There was no update available on the third victim.

The wrong-way driver was also transported to the hospital.

On Friday, DPS said the driver was identified as 37-year-old Steven Ramirez of Sierra Vista. Ramirez allegedly admitted to drinking one beer, two hours before the crash. However, DPS says a receipt from a Mesa bar showed that he bought four pints of beer and “four bourbon well singles.”

He was arrested for aggravated DUI and aggravated assault.

Northbound lanes of Loop 202 were shut down at Guadalupe Road for several hours during the investigation.

Ramirez, next court date is set for May 2.
