GLENDALE, AZ — A Glendale carjacking suspect has been found to be a man who served 15 years in prison for murder.

Glendale police report that on May 2 a citizen contacted them saying he was the victim of a carjacking. The victim reportedly told police that he was working on his truck when a man, later identified as 51-year-old Benito Pedro Abeytia, racked a handgun and placed it on his chest.

He then allegedly stole the victim's truck, phone, hat, belt, and other items.

The victim contacted police again later that day when he saw the suspect walking down the street near 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. Abeytia was wearing the hat he allegedly stole from the victim.

When police found Abeytia in another truck, they also reportedly found many items stolen from the victim.

A records check of Abeytia shows multiple prior convictions for burglary, theft and second-degree murder for which he served 15 years in prison.

He has now been charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, and vehicle theft.
