MESA, AZ — Police say a GPS ankle monitor linked a woman to a debit card theft at a Mesa gym.

Mesa police report that on October 22, a man was working out at a Planet Fitness gym when he was alerted that his debit card had been used at a nearby location.

He checked and found the lock on his gym locker had been removed and his wallet stolen.

Police say surveillance video shows Safeta Alkaz, 42, distracting an employee while another man entered the men's locker room and stole the wallet.

Alkaz then attempted to use the debit card to buy gift cards at a nearby Fry's store. She was denied the purchase because she would not provide identification, court records show.

Police reviewed surveillance video at the Fry's store and reportedly found Alkaz wearing a GPS ankle monitor. Police used this information to track Alkaz to the Planet Fitness and the Fry's.

Alkaz was located and arrested later that night.

She has been charged with burglary and theft.
