MESA, AZ — A suspect has been arrested for murdering a woman and severely injuring a man in a shooting that happened in a Mesa tunnel last month.

Mesa police report that on November 6 they responded to an area near Sossaman Road and Southern Avenue for a reported shooting.

Police say they found a man who was shot three times in the throat, hip and chest. That victim told police there was a woman inside the tunnels who was also shot.

Police found the woman, Briana Richards, age 19, deceased on a mattress.

Police learned the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old William Eden Shepherd, confronted both victims in the tunnel then left.

The male victim reportedly told police that they slept on the mattress and he later woke to the sounds of gunshots.

Witnesses allegedly said that Shepherd was "stalking" Richards. Shepherd was located and arrested on unrelated charges a week later.

Police located and talked with another man who allegedly told them that Shepherd borrowed a handgun from him.

When he returned the gun, Shepherd allegedly told him, "I had to do it. I put 3 in her."

He reportedly said he was upset with her for selling a ring that belonged to his son.

Shepherd is being held on a $1,000,000 bond for first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
