MESA, AZ — A man in body armor fired multiple shots at Mesa apartments, endangering a family of six.
Mesa police report that on May 25, they responded to an apartment complex near Mesa Drive and Broadway Road for a report of shots fired.
Officers allegedly found eight bullet strikes in two apartments and a parked car. One of the bullet strikes was in a master bedroom of an apartment where a 9-year-old girl was sleeping.
No one was injured in the shooting.
Police located 36-year-old Joshua James Barnes with body armor and two handguns.
Barnes reportedly told police that he fired several shots at his bathroom mirror, believing people were watching him. He also allegedly fired multiple shots at his kitchen window after seeing a silhouette of a woman with a gun.
Police say Barnes told them that he uses meth twice a week.
Court records show that 12 days earlier, police transported Barnes to a mental health facility after people saw him with body armor, holding a knife and screaming at invisible people.
Police say Barnes was evaluated for "paranoia and methamphetamine-induced psychosis."
Barnes has been charged with body armor misconduct, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and multiple counts of endangerment.
