A Mesa man jumped from a second-story balcony to escape after being punched and kicked in the face, police said.

Mesa police report that about 1:30 a.m. on December 9 they responded to a motel near Recker Road and Main Street. They found the victim hiding in the bathroom of the motel office, scared and "visibly shaking."

The victim reportedly told police that he was there to visit a friend when an argument broke out because he had alerted police to stolen bicycles that were found at his house.

The suspect, 21-year-old Brandon Shay Moeller, allegedly punched the victim, kicked him in the face and stomped on his head. A woman in the room heard the commotion and came to his aid.

That’s when, police say, Moeller grabbed a handgun and pointed it at the victim. The victim ran out to the second-story balcony and jumped down to escape.

Police say the victim had cuts and bruises to his face and "a bruise in the shape of knuckles" on his back.

Upon his arrest, Moeller reportedly admitted to hitting the victim but denied pointing the gun at him, saying he picked it up so the victim wouldn't get to it, police said.

Police say the gun was reported stolen out of Mesa last month.

Moeller has been charged with aggravated assault and unlawful imprisonment.
