PD: Friends steal safe from vacationing Scottsdale woman

A Scottsdale woman did what many of us do when we go on vacation -- she trusted her home and her animals to a friend. In this case, her trust was misplaced.

Scottsdale police say that the victim had gotten an inheritance from her father's passing just before going on vacation from mid-June to early July.

She reportedly contacted a friend to watch her home, near 90th Street and Cactus Road, and tend to her animals.

When she returned, she found her safe missing. Records show the safe held $90,000 in cash and another $20,000 in jewelry. Police say there were no signs of forced entry into the home.

The woman the victim had asked to watch her house reportedly told police that her son, Arthur Baird, had said his brother stole the safe, and gave Arthur money "to keep quiet about the burglary." Baird also gave his mother $8,700 which she later returned to the victim.

When police interviewed Baird, he allegedly admitted to accepting the money from his brother, knowing it was stolen.

Baird was arrested on August 3 and has been charged with one count of theft.
