PHOENIX — A convicted murderer released from prison 14 months ago allegedly stabbed a man in Phoenix because "he was weak and elderly."
Phoenix police say that on Saturday morning they were called to 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street for a reported stabbing.
Three witnesses allegedly identified Charles Aday, age 35, as the person responsible for stabbing an 84-year-old man in the chest.
Witnesses helped police detain Aday about 100 yards from the stabbing scene.
Aday allegedly admitted to police that he had used meth just before the assault. Aday also reportedly admitted to stabbing the man because "he was weak and elderly." He also allegedly said he wanted to "sacrifice him for the country and the people."
Aday was convicted of murder in January 1996. He was released from prison just over 14 months ago, after serving 20 years for second-degree murder.
He is being held on a $1,000,000 bond for attempted first-degree murder.
The victim was taken to the hospital and survived the stabbing.
