Police say a Surprise homicide suspect on the run was found in New Mexico Tuesday before taking his own life.

Michael Lee Peacock, 44, was wanted for allegedly shooting and killing a man at an apartment complex near Peoria and Sarival avenues, Surprise police spokesman Greg Welch said.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Erick Prieto of Surprise.

Court paperwork obtained by ABC15 reveals that Prieto, his girlfriend, and Peacock, his girlfriend's father, all lived together in an apartment. Prieto and Peacock left for work when Peacock reportedly shot Prieto in the back of the head.

Peacock fled the area in a work truck and made a call to his estranged wife of 18 years telling her to "Go to the apartment and get their daughter." He also reportedly told her that, "He did what he had to do."

After her mother woke her, and she discovered her Prieto had been shot, she called Peacock who allegedly told her, "I shot and killed him. He was going to ruin your life."

Police say authorities in New Mexico located Peacock, who ran from officers and took his own life moments later.
