A Mesa mother left her 2-year-old child sleeping alone with drugs and drug paraphernalia, according to court records.
Documents show that on Oct. 30 around 9 a.m., police were alerted about a child left alone in a motel room near Higley Road and Main Street.
When no one answered the door, officers entered the room and found the child sleeping inside. They also found heroin syringes, methamphetamine pipes and drug residue in the room. Records said there was no adult in sight.
Police said that the child's mother, 24-year-old Skylar Shelby Torstenson, returned to the room about 20 minutes after officers arrived. She admitted to police that the drug paraphernalia belonged to her, documents said. She also admitted to using drugs the night before.
Torstenson told police that she left the child sleeping while she went out to get money to pay for the motel room. She’s since been charged with child abuse and possession drug paraphernalia.
