PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation following a shooting in downtown Phoenix that left a young man dead.

Authorities say around 3:45 a.m. Saturday, officers were called to the area of 3rd Street and Van Buren for reports of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found 19-year-old Elijah McCarthy, who had been shot. Detectives say he was involved in an altercation, which led to shots being fired.

McCarthy was at a party in the area, and when he went downstairs to meet an unknown person, he was shot.

Police say he then ran to the area of 1st and Polk Streets and collapsed.

He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment in "extremely critical condition," and later died from his injuries, according to Phoenix police.
