PHOENIX — Authorities say a 19-year-old man is in critical condition after a shooting involving Phoenix police Tuesday afternoon.

Police say about 3:53 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call in the area of 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road for reports of a man throwing rocks at vehicles in a business parking lot. The caller told police the man threatened him with a knife when he confronted him.

Two officers located the man and gave him verbal commands to stop what he was doing. Police say the man ignored the commands and began walking backwards away from the officers while armed with a knife.

Officials say the man did not respond to the continuous commands to drop the knife and an officer tased him, but was unable to stop the man.

After a second taser deployment, police say the man lunged toward the officers with the knife and an officer fired her service weapon at the man.

The man was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say there were no injuries to officers or victims who were threatened by the man.

This is the second shooting involving police in the Valley reported Tuesday as a man was shot and killed by officers earlier today near Interstate 10 and Baseline Road, police say.

The investigation is ongoing.
