A suspect arrested last week after reportedly carjacking a vehicle from a dealership in Goodyear was heading to Mexico to avoid a warrant for his arrest from Alaska.

Goodyear Police report that on April 14,Desmond Deon Anderson, age 32, stole a brand new 2017 GMC Sierra pickup truck from Yates GMC at gunpoint around 6:30 a.m.

Detectives worked with OnStar to track the truck that had gotten on Interstate 10 through downtown Phoenix and continued south of the Valley, heading toward Mexico.

Police say they followed the truck with a Phoenix Police helicopter, however, but did not pursue the truck.

OnStar deactivated the vehicle outside of the Phoenix area, and it came to a stop near the Gila River Bridge. SWAT team members then took the Anderson into custody.

Police say they found bus passes in the truck showing Anderson came to Arizona from Alaska a few days before the robbery. Anderson also has a warrant for his arrest on a probation violation on drug charges. Police also found a black handgun in the truck, which turned out to be a BB gun.

Police believe Anderson may also have been involved in an armed robbery of an Avondale grocery store.

While being taken to jail, Anderson reportedly attempted another escape, by slipping a handcuff and fleeing from officers. He was soon caught and put into the jail.

He's been charged with armed robbery, car theft and escape.
