PHOENIX — Senator Martha McSally and her challenger, Democratic nominee Mark Kelly held what's expected to be their only debate on Tuesday night heading into the 2020 election.

Watch the full debate in the player above.

Sen. McSally beat out her long-shot opponent in this year's primary election to contend for the Senate seat she currently holds. Following the death of Sen. John McCain in 2018, Governor Doug Ducey appointed McSally to complete his term.

Kelly, who is a former astronaut, ran unopposed in the primary and is now the Democratic candidate for the Senate seat on the ballot in November.

A Kelly victory would shrink the GOP’s Senate majority at a crucial moment and complicate the path to confirmation for President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. Because the contest is a special election to finish McCain’s term, the winner could be sworn in as soon as the results are officially certified.

Other winners in the November election won’t take office until January.
