Devry University job placement rates questioned

and last updated

Part of the sell of for-profit schools is the job placement rate once you graduate. But the Federal Trade Commission says DeVry University isn't living up to its own promises.

In a complaint released on Wednesday, the agency says that DeVry claims 90 percent of graduates looking for jobs, find them quickly and get paid more.

Instead, the FTC says some graduates are finding work but not in their fields.

The complaint uses examples of a business administration graduate working as a waiter, a technical management major who delivers rain gutters and another working as an unpaid volunteer.

In a statement, DeVry says it plans to "vigorously contest the complaint," saying their employment numbers are "sound, rational and transparent."

The school accuses the FTC of using "anecdotal examples that exaggerate the allegations but do not prove them."

Because of the complaint, the U.S. Department of Education wants to require the school to stop the claims until it takes more steps to substantiate them as well as inform students the 90 percent claim is not proven.

The school is requesting a hearing to defend themselves.

Before you pay for any school, ask for placement examples, and check out any student complaints online.
