PHOENIX — When we pick up rental cars, a lot of us choose an airport location. It's convenient. But it's also the most costly way to rent because of all the fees and taxes.
By picking other locations, and taking an Uber or Lyft, I've saved a lot of money. I recently checked locally for a van during busy Christmas week.
At Sky Harbor it was $877 with one company.
But with that same company, same times at a South 7th Street location, it was just $534. You save $343 by renting from a location just 3 miles from the airport.
And buying air travel separately can also save, since fewer seats trigger higher prices.
I checked flights from Phoenix to St. Louis around the holidays. When I put in three people flying, the cost would be $434 for each passenger.
But when I looked for one person, for the same flight, it costs just $336. It was the same price for the second passenger.
This way, it's only the third person who triggers a higher $434 price. Buying separately saved $196.
And that's just one way.
