Scared of skimmers? There's an app for that!

It detects skimming at the gas pump

Every week it seems, credit card skimmers are being discovered at gas stations around Arizona.

It's one place where chipped credit cards and it's protections still cannot be used.

And scammers are finding easier ways to get your credit information.

Now, some are using Bluetooth devices so they can get it wirelessly without having to remove their device at the pump.

But Data Doctors Ken Colburn says there are apps you can use to detect whether Bluetooth is being used at your gas pump.

For iPhones, there's an app called "Card Skimmer Locator" and for Android there's "Skim Plus."

You open the app and hold it near a gas pump to see if it senses Bluetooth technology.

Colburn says they are not 100 percent effective but worth trying.

Also, to protect yourself at gas stations, try using pumps closest to the store window where any issues can be better detected.

And never use a debit card since thieves could get right into your bank account.

In fact, Colburn suggests using a gas card instead of a regular credit card.

The information would be less desirable since it could only be used to buy gas.
