PD: On-duty Phoenix officer dies after 'medical event'

The Phoenix Police Department said an on-duty officer died after experiencing a "medical event" Wednesday.

Officials say the officer was taken to the hospital for medical care, though the event did not occur during a call for service.

On Thursday, Phoenix PD tweeted about the death of Officer Mark Aker writing: He joined the department in 1994 and was assigned to the Maryvale Estrella Mountain Precinct.

No other details have been released.

The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association released the following statement regarding Aker's death:

The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association is heartbroken over the unexpected loss of Officer Mark Aker yesterday.

For nearly 30 years, Officer Aker served the citizens of Phoenix with the utmost integrity and dedication.

We grieve with his family and ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

The Phoenix Police Department is also mourning the loss of Sergeant Tim Wheeler who died from a medical event at home on Tuesday. In a tweet, Phoenix PD wrote: Sgt. Wheeler joined the department in 2007 and was assigned to the Desert Horizon Precinct. Rest in peace Sgt. Wheeler; you will be dearly missed.

The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association also released this statement regarding the passing of Sergeant Wheeler:

The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association is saddened by the unexpected loss of Sergeant Tim Wheeler at his home on Tuesday, May 9.

Sergeant Wheeler served the citizens of Phoenix since 2007 with dedication and courage.

We grieve with his family and ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
