A man was found dead inside an apartment that went up in flames, officials said.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, there was a fire at a two-story apartment complex near 35th Avenue and Tierra Buena Lane on Sunday morning.

The fire began on the first floor of the complex. An adult man was found dead inside a first floor apartment.

Police says the man was bed-ridden due to medical issues. His caretaker went into the apartment and found the home full of smoke. The caretaker tried to take the man out of the apartment. They say the man was smoking while breathing oxygen and that's how the fire got started.

Two homes are unlivable due to damage, and 12 people have been displaced.
