Florence community mourns sudden death of 9th grader

FLORENCE, AZ — The Florence Unified School District is mourning the loss of a 9th grade student who died Monday evening.

The district says Dyrell Lopez died unexpectedly and psychologists were on campus Tuesday to help teachers, classmates and staff.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Dyrell Lopez as they grieve the loss of a son, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend," the district said in a Facebook post.

Family members say the 14-year-old collapsed and died while walking near Butte Avenue and Orlando Street around 6 p.m.

Details surrounding his death have not been released.
