MARICOPA, AZ — An officer is injured and a man is dead after a shooting involving police in Maricopa Thursday afternoon.

Officials say the incident happened around 2:50 p.m. near SR 347 (John Wayne Parkway) and Bowlin Road.

One officer was shot and was taken to a Valley hospital in stable condition.

Officials say the "sole suspect' is dead and has only been identified at this time as a 35-40-year-old man.

The man was recently released from the Department of Corrections and has an "extensive violent criminal history," according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

It is unknown what led up to the shooting. The incident remains under investigation.
