MARICOPA, AZ — An officer is injured, and a man is dead after a shooting involving police in Maricopa Thursday afternoon.
Officials say the incident happened around 2:50 p.m. near SR 347 (John Wayne Parkway) and Bowlin Road after Maricopa police officers spotted a "known violent felon" with outstanding warrants.
The man, identified as 38-year-old Keith Tyler Prock, saw the officers and attempted to leave. Officials say he then shot Maricopa Police Officer Sebastian Sanchez several times.
Officers returned fire, ultimately shooting and killing Prock.
Pinal County Sheriff's Office says Prock had an extensive violent criminal history and was associated with a major gang.
Officer Sanchez was shot and was taken to a Valley hospital in stable condition but has since been released.
"This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers face every day to keep our community safe. Our department is like a family, so when one of us is hurt, we all feel it. Thankfully, our officer survived, and their prognosis is positive," Maricopa Police Cheif Mark Goodman said in a statement. "However, they sustained serious injuries that will take time to heal. We are grateful for the support we have received from Maricopa residents, as well as our fellow law enforcement departments across Pinal County and the Valley. We remain committed to serving our community and ensuring the safety of Maricopa.
The incident remains under investigation.
