An Army combat veteran's widow is suing the city of Maricopa over the fatal shooting of her husband.
Maria Garcia's lawsuit alleges wrongful death, negligence and other wrongdoing in the shooting of 32-year-old Johnathon Guillory.
Guillory was shot during a 2015 encounter two days after he and a counselor went to the police station to talk with police about his post-traumatic stress disorder.
The Casa Grande Dispatch reports that the lawsuit filed Jan. 19 in federal court contends Guillory posed no threat and that police "needlessly escalated an otherwise civil encounter."
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said Maricopa officers were justified to shooting Guillory because he pointed a gun at an officer.
Maricopa officials did not immediately respond Tuesday to a request for comment on the suit's allegations.
