State Route 77 southeast of the Valley was closed Sunday morning after a deadly crash involving two cars and a group of horses.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a black passenger car struck part of a group of eight horses in the roadway just before 4:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Troopers say the driver of the passenger car was killed in the collision.

Three of the horses also died at the scene and a fourth had to be put down due to injuries.

Shortly after, a pickup truck struck one of the horses, damaging the vehicle, but fortunately that driver was not injured.

Traffic on SR-77 was blocked at milepost 132 through the morning and rerouted through Dudleyville.

The name of the driver who passed away on scene has not yet been released.
