Officials say a structure fire has grown and spread into a brush fire that has consumed a handful of homes in the historic part of the city.

The fire started in a vacant home on Star Avenue around 5 p.m. Due to the compact nature of the area and high winds, the flames quickly spread to surrounding brush and traveled up the mountain.

Six structures have been damaged, according to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management. A total of 5.1 acres had been burned as of Tuesday morning, according to fire officials.

Authorities said about 50 people were evacuated from Star Avenue, as well as parts of Moon Canyon and Lochlin Avenue.

Those fighting the fire said the wind and steep terrain hampered firefighting efforts.

Several crews and forest service engines will remain in Bisbee Tuesday as the fire was 45 percent contained.

Officials say that homes will remain evacuated until utilities are turned back on.

No injuries had been reported.

Those forced to leave their homes were evacuated to St. Patrick's church, police said. Evacuees with questions can call a hotline that has been set up: 520-432-6021.

A Red Flag warning is set from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
