Pima County health officials say a child in the county has died of the flu.

Along with representatives from the Arizona Department of Health Services, the county officials say the child died of a "systemic bacterial infection complicated by the flu virus."

It was the first pediatric flu-related death in the state this season.

"Although this flu season in Pima County has been mild compared to prior years, the risk of influenza among our vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly is very real and can have devastating consequences," said Dr. Francisco García, Director of the Pima County Health Department, in a statement. "If you have not stopped to get your flu shot, please do so today, it is not too late."

Doctors recommend flu shots for everyone age 6 months and older.
