A New York couple says a Tucson adult bunk bed maker took their money and never delivered the product they paid for. Louise Rizzo says she paid Haak Designs of Tucson over $9,000 for a pair of custom made adult bunk beds in November of 2018 for her ski home in Montana.
Rizzo says the maker never finished the job and now she wants her money back. Rizzo reached out to 9 On Your Side for help to and we tracked down the bed maker in Tucson and found out why orders are not being filled.
"We were searching the internet and found this company that had a beautiful website looked very professional called Haak design. We needed bunk the beds to be a certain height, because the room we need it for had a low ceiling,"Rizzo said.
The beds were supposed to have USB ports, Wi-Fi and more. However, the 6-to-8-week timeline given to the family didn't stick.
"We ordered two bunk beds, which are technically four beds, full over full bunk beds. Originally they said the second week in January. So we waited then reached out in February and in March and in July and every time we reached out to them there was always an excuse." Rizzo said
9 On Your Side did some checking and it turns out that Haak Designs was having problems filling orders. The owner of Haak Designs David Haak released the followng statement:
"As the owner of Haak Designs LLC, I deeply regret the situation that I have faced with several of my clients this past year, including Mr. and Mrs. Rizzo.
We service the highest end of a very niche adult bunk bed market for vacation homes and vacation rentals as well as hospitality properties across the country. This year has been exceptionally difficult in that finding skilled craftsmen in the Tucson area has proven to be extremely hard and keeping up with schedules even harder, which has become an epidemic for many companies like mine throughout the country.
The vast majority of our clients come to us for our quality, as we are known for taking extreme measures to ensure the quality of our high - end bunk beds exceed our clients’ expectations.
Our motivation has always been quality driven and not lead time driven, and we are very clear on this point in any of our advertising and in our quotes that are presented to potential clients.
Most of our clients are extremely understanding of the struggles that we have faced, and yet prefer to wait for the quality of our product, as there are no other bunk beds even close to our quality and attention to detail without ordering fully custom bunk beds at twice the cost.
Due to family health issues that we have been dealing with since Mid - April, I have been away from the business for some time to tend to family needs.
As a result, I have down - sized the shop from 7,000 square feet to 2,400 square feet and I am now working alone, tending to all aspects of the business as well as the medical needs of my family, which is extremely overwhelming at times.
As soon as the medical needs of my family stabilize and I am able to get back to work full time, I will be completing projects for those who have been patient through the process, and issuing refunds to those who are not willing to wait for their finished product."
The Rizzo's spent another $6,000 on beds with a new company and got their order. When asked what she would do differently , Louise says to do your research and to never pay up front.
"I feel like it's a scam feel like they took our money and the public should be made aware."
The Rizzos have reported the incident to the Better Business Bureau . At last check the grade for Haak Designs was under review.
