Officials: Former Department of Public Safety trooper arrested by FBI

TUCSON, AZ — A former Department of Public Safety employee is facing 26 felony charges after being arrested by the FBI Saturday.

According to DPS, authorities arrested Rene Algara as a result of a criminal investigation related to 21 charges for money laundering and five charges related to falsifying government documents.

Officials say Algara was fired by DPS prior to his arrest. He started with the department in 2016 and was assigned to the Highway Patrol Division in Cochise County.

This remains an active FBI investigation.
