A top official in the Pima County Sheriff's Department has resigned after being indicted for misusing money.

Sheriff Chris Nanos says Chief Deputy Chris Radtke has been indicted for improperly using RICO funds. He has since submitted his resignation and in a news release Nanos declined to comment on another law enforcement agency's investigation.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation launched an investigation after claims Radtke used RICO money to bankroll the remodel of a cafe owned by his niece, according to ABC15 sister station KGUN in Tucson.

Nanos said the department's expenditures using RICO funds, that is, money seized as part of criminal investigations, must go through a "stringent" process that involves a review by an outside agency and an audit.

"We will continue to review all processes to make sure checks and balances are working appropriately," Nanos said.
