YUMA, AZ — Border agents apprehended nearly 750 undocumented immigrants over the weekend in the Yuma sector, according to a Monday release.

Border Patrol officials said the large groups consisted of mostly Central American families, and many required medical attention.

The family groups reportedly walked through the Colorado River vehicle barriers near Yuma and surrendered to agents. A majority were Guatemalan, with others coming from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, and Ecuador.

The Yuma sector has seen a 230 percent increase in family group apprehensions and a 36 percent increase in unaccompanied children apprehension so far in fiscal year 2019 when compared to numbers from the same time last year, Border Patrol officials said.

Yuma Sector agents provided medical treatment to 137 migrants, and their ailments reportedly included pregnancy complications, lacerations, respiratory issues, chicken pox, lice and scabies.
