CAREFREE, AZ — An iconic 6,000-square-foot home in the Cave Creek-Carefree area caught fire and partially collapsed early Tuesday morning.

Rural Metro Fire officials say they first received reports of the blaze near Carefree Highway and Tom Darlington Drive around 3 a.m.

The mountainside home, which is locally known as the "wedding cake house," was heavily engulfed in flames on its second and third floors.

Crews had to fight the fire defensively due to collapsing areas of the home and its location on the mountain.

The home was not occupied at the time of the fire, but crews say it appears to be under renovation.

According to a Zillow listing of the European-style, three-tier home, it was built in the 1980s with dome ceilings, elevators and other luxury features.

It's not yet known what caused the fire.
