An adult and child have died and two others are hospitalized after a multi-vehicle crash at Gold Dust Avenue and Scottsdale Road Friday night.

Family of the victims has identified those who have died as 47-year-old Jana and 10-year-old Joy.

It was 3 a.m. when John Edgley got the call that no one wants. He was told his niece, Jana, and her youngest daughter, Joy, were killed in the crash.

"There was like an immediate gloom," Edgley said.

Jana and Joy were in the car with Joy's brother, 16-year-old Ryan, and Joy's dad, Chino.

"They were apparently just sitting at a red light when the drunk driver hit them and ripped their car in two," Edgley said. "And I don't know how fast you have to be going to do that."

Officials say alcohol and speed do appear to be a factor in this crash.

A 34-year-old man was arrested the night of the crash for alleged impairment, though the toxicology results are still pending.

Chino was released from the hospital. Ryan remains hospitalized with a broken back, legs and ribs. Doctors are hopeful the teen will pull through.

Family said they were driving to the children's great-grandmother's house to pick up Joy's birthday present. She had just turned 10 in March.

"Our hope is always with God. Our faith is in God. They passed away on a Good Friday and that is never going to be the same for us," Edgley said. "I don't know what tomorrow is going to bring for us, but I believe our faith will pull us through.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with funeral and medical costs.
