FLAGSTAFF — Police in Flagstaff say an officer fatally shot a man who brandished a knife at two officers who were leaving a community mental health center.

Authorities say the officers were leaving the facility on an unrelated call when Henry Harold Russell, 47, confronted them.

Police say Russell approached one of the officers with both knives raised. The officer commanded Russell to drop the knives at which point Russell lunged at the officer prompting him to fire his weapon, striking the man.

Authorities say both officers performed "life-saving measures" until additional medics arrived.

Russell was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

No police officers were injured in the altercation. The officer involved in the shooting is identified as Officer Tyler Romney, a 3 ½ year member of the Flagstaff Police Department.

According to Flagstaff police, the Coconino County Sheriff's Office will lead the shooting investigation.
