FLAGSTAFF, AZ — A pedestrian was hit and killed by a train in Flagstaff Sunday afternoon.

Flagstaff police say at around 2:53 p.m. they responded to the Amtrak train station near Route 66 and Humphreys Street regarding a person who had been struck by a passing train.

Witnesses told officers 24-year-old Allen Shaffer was walking southbound across the railroad tracks and then got in the middle of the tracks and was waving at an oncoming westbound train. He was then struck by the train and was unable to completely move out of the way as he attempted to run away.

Medical personnel pronounced Shaffer dead on the scene after providing emergency aid.

Flagstaff Police say the investigation is ongoing, and they will continue to review surveillance camera recordings.
