A Kingman Police Department K-9 officer was euthanized after being diagnosed with a deadly disease.

The Kingman Daily Miner reports K-9 Officer Cyrus was put down Tuesday while he was surrounded by his handler, Cpl. Bill Fancher, his family and other members of the police department.

Deputy Chief Rusty Cooper describes Cyrus as a hardworking and very capable K-9 officer. He joined the department in October 2015.

Cooper says Cyrus was struggling with physical problems for several months and was no longer on active duty. He was diagnosed with a rare and deadly disease that that had no guaranteed cure.

Cyrus' remains will be placed next to the remains of K-9 officer Amigo, who died in August 2016.
