Authorities say the body of a California man has been recovered from below the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center reported receiving a call from a resident Sunday evening reporting a car below the South Rim near Lipan Point on Desert View Drive.

A National Park Service helicopter crew on Monday located a vehicle about 1,000 feet below the rim and a body about 200 feet below the rim.

Park rangers hiked in Tuesday and recovered the body.

Authorities say the name of the man is being withheld until his relatives can be notified.

They say the death is being investigated by the Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office.
