PINE, AZ — Pine-Strawberry firefighters are going above and beyond to take care of several birds and chinchillas that were involved in an accident near Strawberry on Friday.

Firefighters say a family of three was on their way to New Mexico when the van they were riding in went over the edge of the road and fell around 50 to 60 feet.

While the family was on the way to the hospital, crews gathered cages of birds and chinchillas from the wrecked van and took them back to the fire station.

Crews say the 19 birds and 4 chinchillas are anxious to go home, but are being well taken care of.

In a Facebook post, firefighters said, "We are not needing assistance at this time and we do not need people to call about them or drop food off for them. THANKS SO MUCH TO OUR WONDERFUL COMMUNITY THAT LOVES TO HELP!"
