A drug bust in Ahwatukee turned up evidence that even caught Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies by surprise.

Swat teams raided a suspected drug house Friday evening and hauled out several people in handcuffs.

When K9 teams and detectives searched the home, they found a grenade and had to call in the bomb squad to secure it. The search also turned up a handgun, marijuana and all the packaging materials needed to sell it along with huge sums of cash.

Deputies say neighbors have been reporting the two women who live there for a long time after several confrontations and alleged threats.  People living nearby documented drug paraphernalia left in plain view in front of the house as well as photos of people using drugs in the driveway and sent it to investigators who’ve also been watching the home.

A major concern is the house is just blocks away from an elementary school and a high school. Detectives learned many of the people showing at the reported drug house are teenagers from the local high school.

"The sheriff has put an emphasis on street level investigations that affect people's daily lives," said MCSO captain Steve Bailey, "Drug crimes like this often turns into other crimes in the communities, burglaries, vehicle burglaries."

The investigation is ongoing.
