PHOENIX — Flags are waving for the 10th year in a unique outdoor display at the University of Phoenix.

Dozens of volunteers have planted 15,000 American flags in the grass on campus to create the phrase “Their Legacy Lives On,” the theme of this year's Memorial Day tribute. The public is invited to walk through the display and reflect on the fallen heroes who served our country.

Ryan Burt was part of the original group who came up with the idea a decade ago. He says they were veterans looking for a way to honor the fallen. It started as a small display of flags randomly dotting the grass. He’s in awe of how the tradition and number of volunteers have grown over the years.

“Now I spend four days before mapping it out, getting the public involved by voting on the theme so it’s special to them. Amazing how it's grown and for the right reasons,” Burt said.

On Friday, the flags will be collected and moved to the gravesites of veterans around the Valley in time for Memorial Day.
