A health alert is shining a light on what kids are doing when parents aren't looking. According to a new statewide survey, an alarming number of teenagers are vaping -- more than are even using marijuana.

The Arizona Youth Survey is done every two years by the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission at 245 schools. Students in 8th, 10th and 12th grades participate.

This year e-cigarette use is up across all grades -- 19.9% say they've vaped just in the last month, compared to pot use at 15.7%.

Even traditional cigarettes were used more than electronic cigarettes in 2016, which is the first year that behavior was even listed on the survey.

Alcohol was still the biggest problem both years -- 20.2% of students admitted to drinking alcohol in the last 30 days.

Health experts say depression and stress are often root causes for teens to start vaping.
