The Phoenix Fire Department rescued a blind man in a wheelchair who fell into a canal Tuesday morning.

The incident happened near 36th Street and Baseline Road around 9:30 a.m.

Firefighters say the man was in his riding his mechanical wheelchair along the canal when he accidentally slipped down the embankment.

The patient actually landed in a sitting position in the canal, and had his head above water.

After about 20 minutes, firefighters were able to pull the man out of the canal using a ladder.

The victim had scrapes and bruises, but was in stable condition.
