Phoenix Fire says a child died Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle near 15th Avenue and Broadway.

The 4-year-old boy was chasing an ice cream truck shortly after 3 p.m. when he was struck in the 1600 block of Corona Avenue, officials said. He was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition and later pronounced dead.

The driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with police. She will not be cited in the crash, police said.

Police said the boy was with his parents prior to running in the street, and it is unclear how he got away from them.

Corona Avenue will be closed from 15th to 17th avenues while police investigate the crash.
