PHOENIX — With flags and signs, dozens of Arizona families gathered to welcome home their loved ones who spent nearly a year overseas.
The 198th Regional Support Group with the Arizona Army National Guard returned to Phoenix on Thursday. The unit deployed last September for a training mission in the Middle East in the country of Jordan.
Roughly 80 citizen-soldiers returned to their families, who had been anxiously awaiting.
"I'm so excited, I am overly thrilled," said Destynie Mccrory, 13, as she waited to see her dad.
Moments later, Mccrory was able to hug her dad for the first time in nearly a year.
"It's definitely the most difficult part of the deployment itself...being away from family," said Staff Sgt. John Mccrory.
