PHOENIX, AZ — Phoenix firefighters say a man in his 20s has died after falling 30-40 feet at Hole in the Rock at Papago Park.
Firefighters responded to a mountain rescue at the park on Saturday around 6 p.m.
Crews say rescue teams quickly made their way up the trail, located the hiker, and began life-saving measures.
Officials say the man was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Phoenix Fire Department was notified by the hospital Sunday that the hiker died from his injuries.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office said the hiker's name is Joel Brotherton.
A witness who watched Brotherton fall said he was attempting to climb up the east side of the rock formation when he slipped and fell. The witness said Brotherton was wearing hiking shoes.
