PHOENIX — A resident of a Phoenix retirement community is fighting to survive after a fire broke out at the facility Tuesday night.
Phoenix firefighters say crews were dispatched to the building near 16th Street and Washington after reports of smoke coming from the third floor.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found a small kitchen fire in one of the homes. During a search of the home, they found an elderly woman unconscious on the floor, according to Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller.
Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and get the woman safely out of the apartment. Officials say she was transported to the hospital in extremely critical condition.
Officials say there are approximately 100 residents living at the facility. No other injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
