Phoenix Fire Department says a man awoke to a loud noise Sunday morning, finding that his apartment had caught fire while he was asleep.
Neighbors called 911 and officials responded to the apartment near 40th Street and Indian School where they found a large fire coming from his duplex unit.
Luckily, firefighters were able to contain the fire so it would not damage other units. Eighty percent of the building was saved, according to Phoenix Fire.
The resident and his dog were able to escape the home safely, but he told officials that he has never checked his smoke alarm batteries and that he didn't hear the alarms going off.
There is no word yet on what caused the blaze.
