Funding provided by Maricopa County will help keep an overflow shelter for the homeless open in downtown Phoenix.
County officials say the Maricopa County Industrial Development Authority has provided a $170,000 grant to Valley of the Sun United Way for operating the temporary overflow shelter at the Human Services Campus through June 30.
Other county money will keep the overflow shelter open through the summer.
The temporary overflow shelter provides sleeping quarters for up to 500 people at Lodestar Day Resource Center and St. Vincent de Paul facilities.
Partners in the project include the county, Valley of the Sun United Way, the city of Phoenix and the state.
